Linda came to the IV Team as our Nurse Director without any vascular access clinical experience or knowledge. Linda asked staff what we'd most like to see added to our practice or improved. She had realized that inserting a proper peripheral IV is not just a task; we just make it look easy. To learn more about the specialty, she attended an Annual Meeting for the Infusion Nurses Society (INS) to get a better understanding of the wide scope and to benchmark with other organizations around the country.
One key enhancement that she facilitated was to bring in small portable ultrasound machines that we could carry with us. She engaged the help of some newer IV team members who had ultrasound experience from their previous jobs. They, along with clinical educators from the manufacturer, began the staff education that continues today. This new skill has been a huge boost in our quest for best practice and patient satisfaction.
She relies on and encourages us to make recommendations on equipment since we're the ones to use it, which exhibits the trust she shows in us. She's a great sideline coach reminding us that we're the experts!

Linda is also not afraid to disrupt the status quo. When we brought up a catheter issue to her, she listened. She was able to collaborate with different vendors, regional CEOs, and engineers to talk about our concerns and implement change.
Linda is accessible and available. One of the biggest practice issues we've faced for years has been the utilization of the IV Team. Linda can generate data and provide creative ideas to enhance our practice and educate the organization and the community about our specialty.
