Her quiet but strong presence and directives gave my father the motivation and confidence to get out of bed and begin walking despite his exhaustion and complete lack of confidence in his ability to do so.
My father spent more than 2 weeks in the Cardiac Care unit at St. Luke's Bethlehem. He was so fortunate to have Barije Raman as his nurse while in both the Cardiac ICU and the regular Cardiac Care wing. I had the pleasure of seeing Barije on several occasions, and my father, along with my mother, who spent each day there, wanted to submit this nomination for her.
My father's post-bypass recovery was complicated, long, and worrisome for him and our family members, however, Barije's professionalism, expertise, and compassion was a continual source of comfort and reassurance to us all. Barije performed her duties day in and day out with a quiet confidence that spoke volumes. Her quiet but strong presence and directives gave my father the motivation and confidence to get out of bed and begin walking despite his exhaustion and complete lack of confidence in his ability to do so. She clearly explained to us and to him everything that was happening during his recovery, especially as the team worked to get his low blood pressure under control. When his walks were cut short due to a drop in blood pressure, Barije simply indicated that he'd walk some more later or tomorrow, and she never appeared "rattled," frustrated, or surprised. Barije shared stories about her family, which made long hospital days more enjoyable and helped my father to connect with her on a personal level.
During my father's lengthy stay at St. Luke's, there were many kind, highly skilled nurses, however there was something special about Barije Rahman. We are grateful that she was so attentive to his needs, and we really appreciate her kindness, confidence, and reassuring manner.
