It was our ED Tech holding his hand and Ariadna talking to him and singing nursery songs to him that calmed him down and allowed the rest of the staff to take care of his wounds.
I want to share a beautiful moment I was able to witness in our ED. We received a patient from a group home with history of Schizophrenia and Intellectual Disability. The patient was in the ED due to a head injury. As expected, the patient was very agitated and aggressive towards the staff. I will say our flow nurse could not assign this patient to anyone more compassionate than Ariadna Chirino RN. Medications were given in an effort to calm him down and being able to clean his wound but they were ineffective. It was our ED Tech holding his hand and Ariadna talking to him and singing nursery songs to him that calmed him down and allowed the rest of the staff to take care of his wounds. Not a single eye was dry in this room. It was emotional how he would say, “I want my mom now.” Ariadna would acknowledge that she was not able to be with him, but she, as his nurse, was there. She showed him caring and compassion, and the way she made him feel safe and taken care of made a huge impact on the outcome for this patient. He was later discharged back to his group home. My nursing leader heart was so proud and so amazed by the generosity of our staff.
