They had the compassion to treat our child and also validate our feelings and concerns as parents.
Our 10th child was born with a congenital condition, Hirschsprung disease. For the first five months of his life, he had a colostomy. In March, he underwent a takedown procedure and spent several days at Upstate. One month later, he celebrated his first Easter inpatient again with an infection. The nurses on 11E are absolutely outstanding with their patient care. What set these two nurses apart was their knowledge and understanding of his disease process and what to expect for his recovery from surgery, and how difficult it was to balance normal family life for the rest of our children. They had the compassion to treat our child and also validate our feelings and concerns as parents. They were willing to help wherever they could and if they didn’t have the answer we were looking for, they would find it. They exemplified what a nurse should be as a caregiver and advocate. I have always considered nursing myself as a career path, and I was so inspired by them, that I returned to school. I can’t thank the staff on that floor enough for their kindness and care, especially these two nurses, and I truly hope that I will be the type of nurse they are.
