Katrina always took a minute to make sure I was okay and establish a human connection. I appreciated this.
First of all, Katrina consistently demonstrated all of the qualities that make an exceptional human being. She was kind, friendly, engaging and seemed to have endless time to discuss my situation and care. When she came to introduce herself, these qualities were present as she offered her assistance if I needed anything throughout the night. I thanked her but didn't expect to see her again since she wasn't my direct caregiver. Did that ever change!!!
It was a very busy night and my nurse was tied up with more seriously ill patients. I had promised that since I was relatively stable and self-sufficient I wouldn't call on the nurses unless there was an extreme need. Even so, due to the extreme busyness of my room nurse, it fell on Katrina to do some of the routine checking that nurses do. I was fine and didn't have needs, but Katrina always took a minute to make sure I was okay and establish a human connection. I appreciated this.
Why do extreme needs always seem to occur at 3 am!!! It was around that time that I experienced some complications that needed quick attention. Katrina answered that call button and was in my room in probably 10 seconds. She quickly recognized the problem and went to work. My room nurse soon showed up, but instead of Katrina accepting her relief, she utilized a team approach, and other assistants showed up to help. All the while, Katrina maintained a lead position in addressing the problem. This situation took a good 45 minutes to resolve and wasn't pleasant for any of us. Yet Katrina maintained a friendly, comforting, and non-stressful approach to my care. I greatly appreciated this as while the situation seemed routine to Katrina, it was quite a new experience for me.
Afterward, Katrina repeatedly stopped in to make sure I was ok as my room nurse was apparently having an extraordinary night of high-demand patients, although she still was able to periodically check in on me. On each visit, Katrina pleasantly handled all tasks, from the most mundane to the technical, and never appeared rushed or inconvenienced. She made my medical care pleasant and created an environment that reduced my stress and concern over being in the hospital.
For all of this which was special to me, and I suspect routine for Katrina I want to give her my thanks and recognition for not just a job, but an experience well done. Thanks, Katrina!
