On this particular morning, FNS delivered one of our patient’s breakfast trays. They came out to the desk and asked if the patient could be repositioned and sat up so he could eat. We went in and did this as it was morning and the unit was busy. We noticed while in the room that he had a cute colorful HAPPY BIRTHDAY sign on his breakfast tray and that his white board had been decorated with pictures of balloons and a sign that said Happy Birthday. As it happened, we also discovered there was a large tray of cupcakes from a local bakery in the breakroom with a big sign that said ‘DO NOT EAT UNTIL LATER!!!!’. What we quickly learned was that this patient’s nurse, Carly, had brought the cupcakes in for this patient to help him celebrate his birthday. She had been his nurse the day before, as well. The team later delivered a cupcake to him, and all sang him a rousing round of HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Later this same afternoon he was transported home on hospice.
