Her career accomplishments speak for themselves. However, what she has brought to CSUDH, in addition to her more than three decades of service and teaching excellence, is her exemplary mentorship of faculty.
The DAISY Award at CSUDH is given to honor one faculty member for outstanding mentorship and service to the School of Nursing (SON). Thus, there is no candidate more deserving to receive the 2022-2023 DAISY Award than Dr. Jan Brewer.
After four years at Columbus College (now Columbus University, as Chair of the MCH section) and 10 years on the faculty at the University of Texas/Austin, Dr. Brewer joined the part-time faculty of CSUDH in 1991. Over the past 32 years, Dr. Brewer has brought to our faculty a vast amount of expertise, experience, and dedicated service. In her career, she has excelled in many domains across the spectrum of professional nursing – teacher –hospital executive leadership – and independent consultant.
Her career accomplishments speak for themselves. However, what she has brought to CSUDH, in addition to her more than three decades of service and teaching excellence, is her exemplary mentorship of faculty. Dr. Brewer has mentored both junior and senior faculty members. She has done so without fanfare, perhaps unnoticed by some. She has done so quietly, effectively, and efficaciously and has guided many at critical times in their career development.
Many new faculty members at CSUDH received a tremendous amount of guidance from Dr. Brewer. They express how valuable her guidance was during these early years. Dr. Brewer gave of her time, her expertise, and, most importantly, her wisdom. She did so with gentleness, kindness, and tremendous generosity. She was always encouraging and positive. As one faculty member commented, “Dr. Brewer is someone whom I can genuinely say helped set my career on the right path. More than two decades later, she is someone I still turn to for guidance and insight.”
Dr. Brewer’s mentorship has guided many. Her contributions to CSUDH will remain with those fortunate enough to have been mentored by her vast experience and wisdom. By a vote of the full faculty, the School of Nursing at CSUDH is proud to honor Dr. Jan Brewer as the 2022-2023 DAISY Award recipient.
