I wanted to take the time to recognize a nurse that made all the difference in the care of a patient who likely would have had a devastating outcome had it not been for her persistence and advocation for them. I was the charge nurse in the PICU during the night shift. We got a rapid response request to the bedside on the floor where Calixta was working. She had recognized her patient had been struggling to breathe and was tiring out and immediately paged the physicians to the bedside. They ordered some labs and were ready to continue to monitor the patient on the floor but Calixta requested a rapid response from the PICU team. We arrived and decided to bring them to the PICU, and within minutes of reaching the PICU room, they became unresponsive and lost their pulse. We initiated CPR and were able to achieve ROSC. Calixta and her team witnessed this as they had accompanied the patient to the PICU. Calixta embodies the safety tenets our hospital strives for, and I’m so grateful that she recognized her patient was deteriorating and advocated for the care she knew they needed. She and her team were integral in the fact that the patient made it to the PICU before they coded. We in the PICU are so grateful for Calixta and the advocacy she gave her patient, which ultimately resulted in a favorable outcome. Thank you Calixta for everything you do for your patients!
