My father, who is terminally ill with Stage IV Metastatic Squamous Cell Carcinoma, was admitted after being discharged two days earlier with worsening symptoms, severe pain, hypertensive crisis, and developing pneumonia. Eric was our RN during the day shift. My dad was not satisfied with the care of the on-call doctor, and not only did Eric immediately go out of his way to calm my dad, but he also went above that physician to the next on-call and pled dad's case. If that wasn't enough, he developed a plan of care complete with visual aids to help simplify the process and ease Dad's frustration. He was attentive, professional, and kind during the shift. When his shift ended, he even came in with the oncoming RN, filled them in on the plan and what was successful, and made sure Dad and the new RN were introduced. He should be considered a model for what exceptional, compassionate care looks like. Honestly, he can't ever comprehend how much his actions helped my family during a very rough time.
