Olivia facilitated this special moment by communicating with his wife and letting her know when it was time.

I would like to manage Olivia up as a compassionate nurse, team player, and strong leader helping resolve issues and improving unit operations. Recently we had a 57-year-old male patient whose hospital stay was longer than anticipated due to a disease process and he passed while in the hospital. He was discharged to rehab and unfortunately readmitted into ICU transitioning to Palliative Care. Once 9East CTMs found out, they rallied together championing him to be transferred back to 9East while bridging over. Olivia was in charge, and she reached out to ATC, NSICU, and spoke with the patient's wife who also wanted to spend his last days in a more comforting environment. All areas worked with Olivia to help with transfer meeting patient/family preferences. 9East rooms are more private and are larger providing more seating accommodating visitations.

The patient was on 9East for almost a month before transferring to rehab and he had a special place in our hearts. During this time he was comfortable and recognized 9E CTMs who had also established a strong bond with his wife. To keep him safe, he sat at the nurse's station most days. Sometimes, he followed staff around. We entertained him, helping him avoid days spent in a stark hospital bed. During this time Olivia was in charge of many shifts. The day came when we knew he was leaving us for a better place. His wife was struggling to watch this phase of crossing over, and unable to stay long at bedside. Olivia came in on her day off to care for him, and make sure he was clean, dry, comfortable, and not alone. She watched his favorite TV shows- mostly football, talked with him, and kept his family updated. In the end, his wife did come to his bedside to spend their last minutes together. Olivia facilitated this special moment by communicating with his wife and letting her know when it was time. Staff wanted to say their goodbyes and let the wife know how special the patient was to all of us. Olivia led the bereavement card signing and legacy stones for the family and had to provide sheets of paper for all the sweet, kind, sympathy messages written to his wife and family. We had to get a manila envelope to house it all prior to mailing. As a Nurse Manager, it was my privilege to witness the extraordinarily compassionate care provided by Olivia. We are all challenged daily to stay positive and provide high-quality care, not forgetting the patient as a person. Olivia went above and beyond for this patient and his family. She is a skillful nurse, but she is "a Natural" and intentional with her care delivery.
