As I sat at the table, I saw my co-worker run across the unit and I immediately jumped up from my seat and headed in that direction. Observant, she saw something from across the room that did not look good. Taking action, she entered the room to see her co-worker being physically attacked by a Veteran as two other staff members stood at the door to the room saying nothing and providing no assistance. She initiated the Behavioral Event Response Team (BERT) call in her quick assessment of the situation inside the room. As I entered the room, she was already trying to calm the Veteran down and figure out exactly what caused his response and actions at that time. I have witnessed on many occasions her ability to connect with a Veteran during a crisis moment and effectively de-escalate the situation. I am honored to work with and under an observant, take-action, kind of nurse. On that day she came to the aid of a Veteran in crisis and a coworker in need of assistance. A far worse outcome was avoided by her quick action and attention to the environment of care. Thank you, Olivia, for being observant, taking action, and responding to a crisis situation that improved the outcome for the Veteran and the staff member directly involved.
