She gave him dignity and respect, which was very important to my dad. He felt like she was on his side, fighting for his rights.
These two nominations came from the same family; a daughter and son that was so very grateful for the care given to their father.
From the daughter: “Sarah went above and beyond as our dad’s nurse. She continued compassionate care for him, even in his last hours. An example of this care was the mouth care given to my dad, cleaning his mouth with swabs and putting ChapStick on his lips. She also assisted with calming him when he was having anxiety and panic in the later stages of his kidney failure. In his mind he was “going” and wanted to leave the hospital. Sarah helped him understand that he was being helped at the hospital. She absolutely took a lot of time to set up a maze of IV lines that connected to him, and then detached all of those same lines so his grandchildren could say goodbye to their grandpa. For a keepsake she gave us a tiny bottle with a paper record of his heartbeat inside. Sarah has done nothing but work very hard and has been so kind through it all. She deserves this award, and we are so happy that she is the person that God gifted to us at the end of our dad’s life.”
From the son: “Sarah went above and beyond with my dad. When he was angry and wanted to leave the hospital due to his declining kidney function and the confusion it caused, she helped talk him down. She helped him understand that no one was trying to hurt him and made him feel like he had choices. She gave him dignity and respect, which was very important to my dad. He felt like she was on his side, fighting for his rights. She was very much the perfect nurse with how my dad responds to people. Sarah was kind and compassionate to us when he was passing away. An example of this kindness and compassion was when my dad was passing away, she made sure we had coffee and snacks and was comfortable as well. This world needs more Sarahs!”
