As a GI attending, I had been working for a couple months trying to have a very complex patient electively admitted for endoscopy and colonoscopy. The patient is incredibly pleasant and suffers from multiple labor-intensive medical conditions. It was impossible for us to deliver care for him or prepare him for his procedure at his care facility. I had personally underestimated the complexity of the admission process for this particular patient. My shortcomings eventually landed in the lap of Dar’ya. My patient was very labor intensive, and required a multitude of medications, movements, and other attention. I was flailing so badly with the admission process, that the patient was likely to be discharged without having his procedures. Dar’ya was not only caring, empathetic, respectful, and a downright positive person with this very challenging patient, but she also spent at least 30-40 minutes with me at the patient's bedside. She spent time walking me through the computer admission process, reconciliation of medications, calling the hospitalist service, calling ER and hospital pharmacist to have urgent medications administered promptly. I know she had multiple other tasks to perform, and the last thing she needed to do was walk through computer 101 with another physician. The patient received excellent care. His procedures uncovered likely lifesaving findings. All of this was because of Dar’ya’s compassion for my patient, patience with me, and absolute dedication to her profession. I have had numerous positive experiences with multiple nurses in our hospital over the last several years, and although I am not very good at articulating how great Dar’ya was that day, my experience with her that afternoon was nothing less than soul-inspiring. We are very lucky to have her. And I thank you so very much Dar’ya!
