Sarra (a new graduate nurse in Labor and Delivery) requested an intrauterine fetal death(IUFD) patient as her assignment. In itself, this patient would be difficult both mentally and physically for any nurse. In addition to the IUFD, the patient had comorbid conditions that could potentially cause more problems during labor and at delivery. Sarra is just a week off of new to practice orientation in L & D and is practicing independently with a “buddy” for questions. During labor, she noticed some changes in the patient’s condition that she knew were not normal and immediately brought it to the attention of the provider and charge nurse. The patient’s condition changed again requiring immediate intervention, and increasing conditions change with more interventions. Working closely with the provider and other nursing staff it was found the patient’s uterus was abrupting which can cause rapid hemorrhaging and potential patient death. The patient’s condition required immediate surgical intervention (c-section). Sarra being a new graduate nurse, kept her eye on the patient, kept her evaluation and listening skills sharp, and was instrumental in keeping this patient safe.
