Amber's kindness, authenticity, and ability to meet me where I was is something I will never forget.
I recently had an extended stay with antepartum after c-section bowel complications. And eventual corrective surgery. It was the most vulnerable time in my life, 4 weeks away from my newborn, IV nutrition due to malnutrition, and two major surgeries in 3 weeks.

I was low. Amber was a light during my stay many times. The first was when my NG tube fell out the first time. The first insertion of the NG tube was traumatic due to violent vomiting. When my NG fell out, Amber saved the day. The surgical resident was unable to insert but Amber helped me remain calm and inserted it successfully. She validated my fears and solved the problem.

Amber was my nurse after surgery. Her kindness, authenticity, and ability to meet me where I was is something I will never forget. It felt fitting that she was the one to be with me while the NG tube was removed. It was the first moment in weeks that I was hopeful for my recovery. She became part of a core memory.

I cannot stress enough that Amber’s validation, trust in my self-advocation, advocacy on my behalf, and her ability to encourage me without patronizing made me feel human when I was feeling completely betrayed by my body. I’m just so thankful.
