During a recent shift, we had a patient on the unit that was in the end stages of life. For unknown reasons, the family was unable to be at the bedside, and the patient was alone. Even though this patient was not a patient of Diana’s, the caregiver in her was going to make sure this patient was not alone during this time. She went to the bedside to be with the patient. She remained there, holding their hand until their last breath was taken and their heartbeat for the last time. Diana not only comforted the patient but was there helping the patient’s nurse with the afterlife process as well. She walked the nurse through everything, from what to do first to family coming in, along with the paperwork and the mortuary process. Diana’s compassion and love for what she does is easy to see. She is a true caregiver to the core. She is one of the best nurses I have ever worked with, and I am lucky she is not only my team member but my friend.
