I had the experience of placing a central line in the ICU with Katherine Trout. Her patient was very anxious, very particular, and very challenging on many levels. She spent a very long time preceding the procedure to explain everything thoroughly, to make the patient’s room more comfortable, and to calm the patient to help the procedure go as smoothly as possible. She spent literally almost an hour, right at the patient’s bedside, holding her hand, using imagery, distracting, and soothing this patient. This would absolutely not have been possible had she not been there to help facilitate this experience. Not only did it help ensure that the patient had the best experience possible during the scary procedure, but it also ensured her safety. Katherine was truly remarkable and, despite a very difficult situation, was able to make it the best it could be. The patience and compassion that she showed this patient were overwhelming, and being able to accomplish this task allowed us to proceed with life-saving care.
