I will start by saying everybody we encountered in the department was absolutely wonderful. These nurses are truly heroes. My wife and I were exhausted, emotionally devastated, and scared during our time on the unit, however each nurse/doctor/staff member met us with a smiling face. Each day felt easier and happier because of the staff. Gabby, in particular, connected with us on a personal and emotional level. She supported us during our encounters. With our daughter being connected to so many machines, it was hard for us to get a picture to announce her arrival without all the devices on display. Gabby noticed we brought in a swaddle and hat from home, and asked about it. After explaining to her we’d like to get a picture for friends and family, she asked our permission to get one overnight for us. The next morning, we showed up, and there was an amazing picture of our daughter waiting for us. In a time when we both felt broken, Gabby found a way to make us smile. Her lightheartedness and constant reminders that our girl would be okay and reaffirming we’d be great parents made our time there a little less scary. She made a difference for us, and we feel blessed that our paths crossed.
