Throughout Nurse Aeshaben Rathod’s first rapid response, her character glowed brightly as a cultural peer and an astute patient care provider. During this difficult family and medical situation, both the patient and patient’s family directly benefited from the actions taken by Aeshaben.

Immediately prior to a change of shift, Aeshaben activated a Rapid Response for her patient, who was newly obtunded and hypotensive. This patient’s baseline was elderly, frail, and well taken care of by numerous present family members, with a significant language barrier. Aeshaben was able to coordinate and direct life-sustaining care with the Rapid Response Team, delegate logistical needs to her fellow floor nurses, and translate in Gujarati to the patient’s family bedside. The trust placed in Aeshaben by the family was clear, and the team could see why in real-time. Aeshaben was swift in her care, patient while translating events to inform the family, and compassionate to all those involved. When the patient’s prognosis turned grave and the discussion moved towards comfort care, Aeshaben did not hesitate to the fact her shift had already been long over nor that the rapid had been occurring for over an hour. The patient was ultimately made comfort-care, and the family was put at ease due to Aeshaben’s navigation of the situation. Speaking with the family present, extended family on the phone from New York, and all while continuing to care for the patient was something marvelous to be a part of.

In these moments, Aeshaben was one of the best of us: a nurse who is tenacious when taking care of the whole patient, with her care and her care of the family. It is for these reasons and her care of the whole patient that we believe that Aeshaben Rathod is a DAISY Nurse.
