Socorro is a role model, and the entire staff looks up to her.
It would take too much space to list all the responsibilities of a Charge Nurse, but their varied duties could be grouped under the single heading of “Unceasing Responsibility.” From seemingly endless routine matters to emergency events calling for all hands on deck, there’s little that happens during a 12-hour shift on any given unit that escapes their attention. While they all deserve respect for meeting their challenges so reliably, a staffer on 3 North and 3 South believes that their Charge Nurse, Ma Socorro Bondoc RN, has earned this month’s DAISY Award.

Socorro is a role model, and the entire staff looks up to her. She takes care of all her people, shares information with everyone who needs to be in the loop, and backs up any staffer having difficulties. Patients always come first, and she regularly rolls up her sleeves to pitch in. It might be as minor as getting someone an extra pudding or stepping in with an unexpectedly combative, disoriented patient. And, if it’s her day off, it’s not uncommon to find her at her station, catching up on administrative documentation and charting. But she isn’t all brisk efficiency. One of her patients referred to her as Mother Theresa, adding that her gentleness reminded him of his mom.

Despite the pressures and all the extra time, Socorro tries to make all aspects of her life fulfilling. Perhaps there’s no better proof than the fact that she and her husband have recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. But there’s another source of personal pride and joy: she has a son in medical school. Leading a life of example as she does, it’s likely that he’ll carry on a vibrant tradition of service and care.

Her nomination letter sums it up nicely, “Socorro is a rock. She’s dedicated, supportive, cheerful, and fair. Check with anyone on staff and ask what they think of her. Whether they’re a PCT, RN, or someone from housekeeping, they’ll say they just want to be like Socorro. That’s the kind of example she sets.”

It’s a fine recommendation, and it’s gratifying to include Socorro’s portrait on this wall honoring an extraordinary nurse.
