She then very compassionately told me that she had been there with him; he was not alone and passed peacefully.
My husband was in 9 Mountain ICU/Trauma for over two weeks. Sam, as she was known to me, was always willing to help in any way possible. Not only with my husband's care but also in making sure I did not need anything. When working with my husband, she was so compassionate and caring. Often apologizing for what she was able to have to perform on him. She was only one of many great clinicians on this floor, but it was Sam that I made the most connection with while there. Even in the end, when we did not know how long he might have, she promised me that if he passed, she would give me a call herself to deliver the news. Adding it would be her honor to do so. Indeed, he did pass almost right after I left the hospital. Sam called and, knowing I would be on a long drive home, asked me if I wanted to pull over for the call. Even then, she was looking out for me. She then very compassionately told me that she had been there with him; he was not alone and passed peacefully. As much as that news hurt, it was made easier to know she had been the one with him and had helped him transition to a place of no suffering. I cannot say how much that meant to me, to not only have her go above and beyond to stay with him but to know she truly cared as if she was a member of my own family. This act of kindness will never be forgotten.
