Barb, overhearing the situation, identified that her co-worker required support, and she then volunteered to talk with the patient.
Not too long ago, Barb assisted a fellow nurse with the discharge of a patient. After having a lengthy procedure, the patient became very apprehensive about the idea of being discharged to home without a nurse to watch over and assist her with the post-op care. The patient’s support person was also fearful, and after several hours in post-op, the patient’s anxiety heightened. The surgeon and anesthesiologist seemed unable to allay her concerns. Barb, overhearing the situation, identified that her co-worker required support, and she then volunteered to talk with the patient. With a soothing tone, Barb sat down and re-reviewed the discharge instructions and post-op care. She provided reassurance and solace and extended herself by giving her personal phone number to the patient with instructions to call if she or her caregiver had any additional questions or concerns.

After sitting with Barb, the patient felt confident and ready for discharge. Later that evening, the patient’s anxiety returned. She called Barb at home, and after an extensive and comforting conversation, the patient and caregiver’s confidence was restored. The following day, Barbara completed a post-op call to ensure all was well.
