Wendy went out and got someone to go out to the patient's home, where they fogged and treated the bed bugs. She also bought the patient a new mattress and other items to help him feel more comfortable. The entire family was very appreciative of the role she played in getting their loved one back home.
Wendy Bynum has been with the organization for 23 years and has worked for me for over 13 years. In the entire time I have known Wendy, she has been a hard worker who gives 100 percent daily.
She is engaged, proud, and protective of her unit and teammates. She recognizes when the team is having a difficult day and tries to lift them up by doing little things. She implemented a coffee cart that is stocked with a variety of tasteful flavors. Each day she works, she makes coffee for everyone and goes around the unit delivering it to them. The staff thinks a lot about this and looks forward to it.
In addition, her multitasking does not allow her to say no, Wendy can be seen juggling and helping everyone to the point of sometimes neglecting her own needs. I find myself often telling her, "Wendy, you have to back off some," but she would reply, "This is just who I am; I cannot help it." Recently while precepting a new RN, the patient told the new nurse, "You should be honored to have Wendy as your preceptor, she is outstanding." This is a consistent comment among others and speaks volumes.
In addition to her cheerleader role on the unit, Wendy is very passionate about the care she gives our patients and often bonds with them. She takes their condition to heart, for example, a patient who was on the unit reported that he did not want to go back home with his family because there were bed bugs everywhere just crawling all over him. This patient is very sick and comes in quite often, and I think Wendy just adopted him as one of her family. Her clinical practice and knowledge base is just as impressive, I believe she is well deserving of this award because she is an outstanding clinician, compassionate, caring, and a loyal team member. She has definitely lived up to Florence Nightingale's pledge, and our patients and staff are blessed to work with her.
