Melissa has proven to be a selfless leader who leads with kindness and understanding. As a lateral transfer to SLN, I was well aware of the expectations of my role, but what I did not know was the SLN way. Through all my questions in learning the SLN way, she never wavered from her supportive, welcoming demeanor and professional leadership style that ties into leading by example. Melissa continues to exhibit a leadership rooted in Watson Caring Science principles.

Melissa truly has a positive attitude/outlook. She believes that everything will work out in the end. She never lets herself fall into negative thoughts. She is amazingly understanding and supportive. Sometimes, I think she has ESP because she somehow knows what is happening and how to address it. She can be relied on 24/7, literally. We have developed a special connection to where we each know what to do and trust it will get done. These are rare in a leader, and I so appreciate working with her. I pass up other opportunities to continue working with her.

I have been fortunate to have Melissa as my leader. Her openness to communication makes us feel valued and heard. Her positive reinforcement encourages us to put in our best efforts.

Melissa continues to improve the 9am meeting to both support collecting the data and goals for the day and improving communication between departments, as well as fitting in educational tools to support the managers in their daily work.

Melissa demonstrates true compassion for our patients and strives for Zero Harm. She was instrumental in the implementation of Wound Wednesday and the Fall Passport! She has mentored both managers and staff with their drive to learn not only about quality but also our service principles. She actively rounds on our patients and staff every day, removing barriers and listening to their needs. You often hear Melissa reviewing her patient rounds with her managers and seeking ways for improvement. Melissa continues to improve the 9 am meeting to both support collecting the data and goals for the day and improving communication between departments, as well as fitting in educational tools to support the managers in their daily work.

The DAISY Award recognizes the staff nurse and/or leader who places the patient first and in the center of care.  Melissa goes out of her way to do this and is well deserving of this award.

The American Nurses Association states that “A nurse leader is defined by their actions, and not always by a position of authority. Leaders in nursing inspire and influence others to achieve their maximum potential. They use applied leadership in nursing by drawing upon critical thinking skills to manage a team”. This leader is all of that and so very much more.

First, she is a transformational leader. She provides her team with the tools they need to succeed and inspires them to follow by leading with a clear vision. Second, she is a thoughtful and thorough communicator, believes in true collaboration, and is mindful in her decision-making. Third, she supports education and quality of practice. She pushes herself to learn and to be relevant and works closely with her team to produce quality outcomes grounded in evidence-informed practices. She encourages her team to expand their knowledge base and challenges their assumptions. She drives for results. Fourth, she is resource-conscious. When there is an opportunity to reduce an expense and maintain the quality of care and services, this leader is all over it. Finally, and my favorite, this leader is an inclusive leader who demonstrates ethics and professionalism and models the way for her peers. She is an authentic leader who leads with loving kindness. She is trusted by her team and has been the Robin to my Batman. She has become the healing environment for so many of us in this room, as well as for scores of patients. She is a Caritas Leader and leads from the heart to inspire us all to be the best at getting better.
