I believe that had Nikki not been so willing to want to make this patient’s family's experience better, they would’ve had bad memories of the day that their loved one passed away.
Nikki went above and beyond her job today, she is bilingual and there was no in person translator available. There was a patient not doing well on another area of the unit, and so Nikki assisted multiple times and translated for the family so that they could have somebody in person let them know that their loved one was not doing well and was probably going to pass away. I assisted in watching Nikki’s patient multiple times because she wanted to keep checking on the patient and their family to make sure that their needs were being met since they spoke a different language. When the patient took a turn for the worse, Nikki called to make sure that a comfort cart was sent up to the patient’s family. She also reached out to the chaplain to attempt to get a Catholic priest since the patient was Catholic, she also assisted in making sure that the families request to have the patient’s body transferred back to Mexico could get looked into since she will no longer be here when that needs to take place. None of this was Nikki’s responsibility, as this was not her patient or the pod that she was working on that day. I believe that had Nikki not been so willing to want to make this patient’s family's experience better, they would’ve had bad memories of the day that their loved one passed away. They would have had to have somebody tell them over the phone that their loved one was dying instead of having the personal connection of somebody in person telling them and being able to be empathetic for them. I feel Nikki Williamson completely changed the entire experience for this end of life experience. It was so refreshing to see a coworker care so much and go out of her way in such a big way today!
