We knew what the outcome with my father would be, but she still treated him like a "whole person" the entire time he was her patient.
Recently, my father was a patient in the IICU at Baptist...during this time, he was an Inpatient Hospice patient. The care he received during his last week of life was a care that I would be forever grateful for. Kylan was my father's nurse for two shifts just a day before his passing. I have been a nurse for 27 years and I know a good nurse when I see one. I can tell she is a newer nurse, but her compassion is what really stood out to me. I say that because she was compassionate not only to my dying father but to our family as well. I know she was a little nervous when she first met me because she knew I was a Nurse Manager within Prisma. But I also quickly noticed that she has good assessment skills. You can tell she is particular (in a good way) in how she likes to take care of her patients. We knew what the outcome with my father would be, but she still treated him like a "whole person" the entire time he was her patient. She was attentive when we asked for medication to help him be comfortable, and she tried to be on top of when certain medications were available. During this time as well, my father lost his IV, and his perfusion was obviously not well, and IVs could be challenging. She didn't get nervous in front of me and found an IV in his thumb that she got on the first try. You could tell she was proud that she got a difficult stick, but she remained professionally confident in front of me and my family. She is a great asset to this unit and to Prisma. I will be forever grateful for her care of my father.
