On Monday, Nina Olney arrived to the unit on a day she was not scheduled to work. I was puzzled to see her as she arrived with a bag of supplies in hand. I quickly found out that Nina had planned to wash the hair of a patient whom she had cared for on the Friday before. This patient has been struggling with addiction and has made minimal progress since her admission. Nina found a way to make the patient feel secure and safe with her. The patient was able to open up to Nina and share her experiences and developed a trusting relationship with her. Although we have yet to understand the breadth of this patient's experiences that have led her to this point, Nina saw an opportunity to make a connection. When Nina arrived that morning, the patient's mother was also at the bedside and was overwhelmed with her compassion. When I approached the room for another task, I made the comment, "Boy, that Nina is something," and Nina quickly responded with, "No, she's something," as she pointed toward the patient. They both smiled back at each other, and the patient said she had thought about Nina all weekend. Nina is no stranger to compassionate care. If she's not providing care for her patients and their loved ones, she is pouring her energy into caring for her peers. This is just one example of the many times Nina has selflessly provided care for her patients. There isn't anything she wouldn't do to make sure her patients are taken care of. Nina is living and breathing our vision to provide exceptional patient care for all through experiences that earn a lifetime of trust.
