My 19-year-old daughter has been a patient at the Children’s Hospital of Colorado since she was born. Over our 19 years, we have had several stays at this hospital for many medical complications. Every experience can be different from the last, but this hospital stay was different from any other… We met an Angel, her name is Alyssa! When Alyssa first came to my daughter’s room, we were a frustrated family looking for answers, looking for support, looking for someone to understand our needs and willing to be an advocate for us, as well as care for my daughter. Alyssa never let our frustration deter her from providing excellent care! One evening before shift change my daughter’s pain became unbearable, and she began to code! As the room filled with medical personnel, including nurses and respiratory therapists, Alyssa remained calm while orchestrating a team of cohesive personnel to stabilize my daughter’s condition while coordinating with the physicians on the phone. Alyssa never wavered in her advocacy for my daughter, support for her family, and understanding of the medical urgency. This situation continued for almost 2 hours, and Alyssa never left her bedside! Alyssa is a true professional with a wealth of knowledge and expertise in her field, but more importantly, she is a phenomenal human being who is compassionate, responsive, caring, and engaged! Alyssa is a true Angel! She is the epitome of what a nurse should be, and her efforts in caring for my daughter and saving her life will never be forgotten! She is forever part of our Family!!
