My first encounter with Katie was on my first day of Community clinical this past fall. When we met for orientation, I knew that Katie was going to have an impact on me. As a clinical instructor, Katie brings passion and an eagerness to help students grow. With every clinical experience, Katie pushed me to be a better student. Katie taught me how to observe the world from a new perspective by opening my eyes to the injustices and realities faced by members of our own community. Katie strives to instill values in her students that will make us not only better nurses, but better people. Katie always puts her students’ needs first and ensures that we have the best clinical experiences. For example, Katie knows that I am interested in working with the elderly, and she made sure that I got a clinical rotation with a nurse at a local nursing home to facilitate my learning. She not only does this for me, but for all of her students, to truly help us make the most out of each clinical experience. Katie pushed us out of our comfort zones by having us do simulations and community experiences like the Transit Sim. During this simulation, students took on the roles of community members and had to get around town using the city bus. The lessons learned from this experience are simply not something you can get from the classroom—that’s what I love about the way Katie teaches us. She can utilize real-life experiences to teach us valuable lessons that will have a lasting impact on us. My life was truly changed through Community clinical, as I had the opportunity to truly serve others in various walks of life. Katie embodies every quality that makes her a phenomenal teacher and person. She is not only compassionate and empathetic, but she is also a true leader. She truly listens to students and actually respects and values our feedback—she makes us feel heard and listened to. Even though I finished her course last semester, Katie continues to check up on me and other students and ask how things are going. She is truly dedicated to her students, her co-workers, and her community. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award. Katie Sidwell pours her heart and soul into her students and her course, and BRCN is beyond lucky to have her.
