She never doubted my ability. She offered her support every step of the way. Being an academic advisor should mean looking at the entire person and trying to look for the root of the problem the student faces.
Kim has not only shown tremendous support for me throughout my time at Blessing Rieman. Here at Blessing, we are taught that as nurses, we will take on multiple roles when caring for patients. We are shown to be teachers, patient advocates, caregivers, communicators, and listeners. I believe that Kim Erskine truly embodies all of those. While her position is to be an academic advisor, she reflects whole-person nursing by viewing each student as a person and not a number. She takes her time during each appointment. She is sure to ask each student how they are doing. She offers her support for students going through a rough time. I transferred to Blessing as a sophomore and was commuting over an hour away for both school and work. I was on my own. I did not have support from family, and any friends I had lived far away. Making new friends as an adult in a new environment is hard. I was awaiting an apartment opening in Quincy. I was getting a maximum of 3 hours of sleep every night. I did not have anyone I could reach out to. Some people believed I would not make it. Some professors believed I was using my situation as an excuse. However, Kim believed in me. Despite the grades I had, she never doubted my intelligence. She was the first person at BRCN to ask me about my home life. I was overcome with emotion. That was my first time feeling more than just an exam grade. We spent hours in her office going over NCLEX questions and test-taking tips. Once I was able to move to Quincy, things became better. She never doubted my ability. She offered her support every step of the way. Being an academic advisor should mean looking at the entire person and trying to look for the root of the problem the student faces. There could be a reason why a student is unsuccessful in the courses. Instead of telling me to “study harder”, she asked me, “What do you believe is hindering you from being the best you can be here?” I think it is important. Without Kim, I would have forgotten my love for science and helping people. If it wasn’t for Kim, I would not be where I am right now. She believed in me before I was “good.” I am grateful for being able to meet her.
