Mary's commitment to creating honest and personal relationships with the staff is something that truly stands out. She is, of course, kind and empathetic, but also extremely patient, really taking the time out to listen and engage with staff even during a busy shift. Her 15+ years of professional knowledge makes her the go-to person for detailed, difficult questions. I can't count the number of times Mary has helped me to get connected with the right resources to solve complex patient issues and get them resolved quickly. Not only does Mary know the institution well, but she also knows GI content inside and out. She is a constant source of information and insight about the various GI disorders, medical treatments, and procedures.

Mary is a guiding light to many nurses newer to GI – she definitely was for me. Two years ago, when I took my first position in outpatient nursing, she was the one who took me under her wing to show me the ropes and guide me through day-to-day tasks. She continues to be an expert listener when times are tough. Mary is our biggest advocate. When you work with Mary, you feel heard, and you feel important. She attends to the little details that show our staff that they are cared about as individuals and that they are seen as whole people and not just another employee. Mary is always ready to jump in if colleagues are struggling. She is willing to work the extra mile to help meet the department’s needs and willing to go the extra mile to ensure we are always delivering quality patient care. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award than Mary Ayers.
