He showed empathy, compassion, and professionalism in caring for the patient and his parents in their great time of need.
One of the most challenging aspects of trauma nursing is sudden tragedy in young patients. Adam was charged with caring for a young man and his family as brain death testing was initiated and declared. Adam showed tremendous leadership and skill in training a new graduate nurse during this challenging case. He showed empathy, compassion, and professionalism in caring for the patient and his parents in their great time of need. Each step of the process was clearly explained as the organ donation process was initiated. Adam collaborated with his team to ensure all patient care needs were met and quality care administered. He ensured that all family and friends were able to be present at the bedside while maintaining privacy. He set appropriate boundaries while ensuring visitation felt welcomed. Each time I assisted Adam in his care of this patient, I was on the brink of tears. Adam was able to stay calm and consistent, which is exactly what those parents needed. While nothing could have spared this family the devastation they endured, Adam was a blessing to all he encountered on this case. Adam is a valuable member of our team and I am thankful for him.
