I need Brad to know that he made the biggest difference of all. If he hadn't taken the steps he did in recognizing that it wasn't just common back pain, that this pain could be more serious, my husband would have coded alone in the room without data from an EKG or a team at the ready.
My husband, M, was admitted to have an abscess lanced on his foot. He was scheduled to be discharged after they closed his wound. OR was running late and his 2pm closure was postponed. He was kept one more night due to the lateness of the procedure. Around 3am the following day, my husband mentioned back pain. Brad could have easily provided pain meds and let him rest since he was in for a foot issue. Brad spent time talking to M and gained a better understanding of the pain and past family history. M had no history of a heart problem, nothing in his bloodwork was showing issue of heart problem, as far as any of us knew my husband's heart was perfect. Even knowing that Brad was concerned about his heart. Brad's concern was escalated to the correct people so that an EKG could be performed. The results of the EKG showed something concerning. As Brad and a team of doctors and nurses were sharing their concerns with my husband, he went into cardiac arrest right there in front of them. Brad immediately got the alert out to all critical care team members. My husband was able to receive CPR without any time lapse. That night M coded 4 times and I got the phone call no wife wants to get. "Mrs. T, your husband is in cardiac arrest and is nonresponsive the team is working on him now". Those words echoed in my head as I drove to the hospital. I question how he was in for his foot. He was scheduled to come home the night before. Arriving in my husband's room on West 4 it looked like a war zone and Brand was the first person I saw. He told me M was in ICU and stable, and he was paging a doctor to take me to him. Brad told me what happened, and even in my state of mind, I could see how shaken up he was. The doctor came and quickly took me away to see M.

Today is one week after the episode, and I have my husband home with me. M is here because of everyone at every level providing care: Doctors, nurses, techs, and so on. But I need Brad to know that he made the biggest difference of all. If he hadn't taken the steps he did in recognizing that it wasn't just common back pain, that this pain could be more serious, my husband would have coded alone in the room without data from an EKG or a team at the ready. I truly believe that if the response time and data weren't there, M wouldn't have survived. My husband is home only because of all the cardiac care that was provided that started with Brad. Thank you, Brad.
