I would like to nominate Steve on behalf of a patient. The patient arrived at the ED via EMS for hematuria following a recent surgery for bladder cauterization. Upon his arrival, the patient told staff that the FD personnel told him not to worry about getting a ride home because they would come back to get him. A ride was a concern for him because he is 94 years old, does not drive, lives at Brookdale, and his spouse does not drive, so he would be stuck in ED until Brookdale staff arrived and if they were going to be able to have a driver available. The patient did not have any other family to give him a ride home and when Steve called EMS to get him, there was no one on duty at the station and Central Dispatch would not tone out for them since this was not an emergency call and ATFD does not do transfers. Steve took it upon himself to use his lunch break to drive the patient home, where his spouse was waiting for him. Steve ensured the patient got into the home safely and watched as the elderly couple held hands and locked up. Both were extremely appreciative of Steve. They could not say enough wonderful things about Steve for going above and beyond to help an elderly couple in time of need.
