He had a wish, and that wish was to see one last sunrise. Sara John was the charge nurse working that night and worked her magic to make that happen.
We had a young man admitted to ICS on palliative care after a courageous 6-year battle with osteosarcoma. The decision was made by him and his mom to move to comfort care. He had a wish, and that wish was to see one last sunrise. Sara John was the charge nurse working that night and worked her magic to make that happen. She worked with security since this would be happening on the roof as well as the respiratory therapist since he had high oxygen needs. She also worked with the resident, his RN and the PCT to be able to help as well. In the early morning, they were able to transfer this patient to the roof to receive his one last wish, the sunrise. Sara worked so hard to make sure everything fell into place and collaborated with many different teams to make this happen. It was a beautiful sunrise that morning. This peaceful moment was made possible because of Sara's efforts to put the child first and always. This example is not an isolated incident. Sara demonstrates what it is to be an exemplary bedside nurse as well as a leader. She gives 110% in everything she does and has helped lead our hospital to improve both patient and staff experience. Her inherent kindness and knowledge shows in everything she does. She makes an indescribable difference for everyone at Primary Children's Hospital.
