Jon’s assertiveness, attention to detail, and ability to ask for help played a big part in ensuring his patient had the best possible outcome.
Last night Jon got a patient up from PACU s/p colectomy during shift change. Jon did a thorough assessment of the patient within 15 minutes of the patient's arrival on the floor. He discovered that he could not find pedal pulses in the left foot. Jon immediately escalated that to the day charge and myself (night charge). We both tried unsuccessfully to find a pedal pulse, only finding a popliteal pulse. The leg was becoming cooler and mottled. A venous duplex was ordered immediately to rule out DVT. There were no DVTS, but there was a complete occlusion of the femoral artery and partial occlusions of the iliac arteries in the left upper leg. Jon contacted the doctor immediately. The patient was taken to emergency vascular surgery within the hour. Jon’s assertiveness, attention to detail, and ability to ask for help played a big part in ensuring his patient had the best possible outcome. Thank you, Jon, for all you do for your patients and their families.
