I had the pleasure of observing and validating this TM for Bedside Shift Report. They received a report that the patient was withdrawn. The staff seemed worried about him. That day, the physician spoke to the family and this person gowned up and went directly to the patient and started talking to him. She specifically asked him what kind of food he liked. She proceeded to ask what else do you like and was able to get breakfast ordered for him. I came back the next morning to witness her hand off bedside shift report. What I observed was a patient who could not stop talking. He was a totally different patient, definitely not the patient I observed that night and several shifts ago. This person even shared with me that he talked all night long and wouldn't stop... My point is that this team member treated this withdrawn patient with dignity and respect. She took the time to really see the patient. Who knows if this patient would have survived this admission if they had not been his nurse that night. I am humbled to have witnessed this event, and I am grateful to this person for taking the time to talk with this patient. This is the very ART of Nursing.
