I had retina repair surgery recently. The prior 24 hours had been a whirlwind of anxiety and emotion. Both of my retinas had detached and I was quickly losing my vision. As a mother of two young children, I was a ball of nerves and fear as my husband guided me into St. Francis that morning. Every nightmare scenario had been running through my head for the past 24 hours since my vision began to darken. I imagined what it would be like to never see their faces again. My vision began failing when I was a small child and losing it completely has always been a deep fear of mine. I was weeping as I entered the pre-op area. As soon as my nurse, Johnathan Farrow, entered the room, everything changed. He introduced himself and his position as a pre-op RN and told me he was going to take good care of me and everything would be okay. He had the brightest smile and a gentle yet confident voice and demeanor. He was also extremely professional, talked me through everything he was doing to me, and prepared me for everything that was to come. He answered all my questions thoroughly and in language I could understand. He explained every medical term that he thought I may not understand. We also had a good time and laughed together. He really eased my anxiety by fully educating me and being present. He never left me in the room for long and was quick to return when he had to step out. I felt like he was respectful of my fear and truly cared about both my physical and mental/emotional well-being as a patient. I teach in the Communication department at Clemson University, and one of our department’s focus areas is health communication. Throughout our time together, I thought over and over that Johnathan embodied the principles of bedside patient communication. Practitioners could learn a lot just by watching him in action. I will be forever grateful that he was my nurse during this time. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect RN for my situation. I am excited to nominate him for this recognition, and I hope he gets the kudos he deserves!
