That is when Ken stepped out of the room and gently asked the patient’s wife if she wanted to hold his hand.
A patient in their 30’s arrived at our ED with CPR in progress. This patient was finally stabilized to the point they were able to go to the cath lab. Unfortunately, the patient coded in the Cath Lab but was stabilized enough to eventually move to the ICU. There are so many people who were part of this patient and family’s life who did amazing things. This recognition is specifically for the work I viewed with Ken Bailey. Ken called me around 3:30pm to help assist him with House Supervisor duties while he was assisting staff with this patient. Once I completed what was immediately needed, I went to the ICU where the patient’s wife was standing just outside the room while staff were setting up the mass transfusion machine. To set the scene, the patient is in the center of the room with staff all around, 3 IV pumps completely full with chambers running different medications, a ventilator, cardiac monitor, code cart and now the mass transfusion machine. I was standing outside the room talking with the patient’s wife regarding what was occurring and the purpose of the mass transfusion machine. I could see on the monitor the patient’s vitals were starting to trend in a negative way. That is when Ken stepped out of the room and gently asked the patient’s wife if she wanted to hold his hand. The wife said yes. Ken gently guided her in the room avoiding the machine and cords and set up the stool next to the patient for her to sit down. Ken then got on his knees next to her so he was at eye level guiding her hand to her husband’s. He spoke calmly and softly to her in a way that brought tears to my eyes being present in this sacred space. In this beautifully orchestrated chaotic scene was staff doing all they could to save this patient, while his wife sat next to him holding his hand sobbing, begging him to come back. Unfortunately the patient did not survive. I pray this patient’s wife one day finds peace in having been given this special moment with her husband. Ken demonstrated compassion and humankindness to her that will forever be a special memory for me. To be reminded of our humanity in such a touching way, I will forever be grateful to have been present. Thank you Ken for your leadership and genuine compassion during a difficult situation.
