We were transferred from another hospital to Poudre Valley Hospital because I had a raging case of pneumonia. The doctors at the first hospital could not get the pneumonia under control nor an IV line inserted. This left us with understandable concerns and a deep fearfulness. Upon our transfer to PVH, we found new hope because of the care received from all the caregivers we found there. We found an attitude of caring which surpassed anything we had found within recent years. Nurses have the near impossible job of caring for people in pain. Those who have no inclination and perhaps energy, to even notice their nurses let alone be nice to them, even if it's just with a simple thank you. Michelle Ing had a genuinely caring heart while she cared for me. I saw the best in her while she took care of my needs. Michelle brought a sense of comfort with her whenever she entered my room. When she was with us it was if we were no longer in a hospital, but instead in the care of a friend. Between the nurses shifts we found ourselves hoping that Michelle would be the nurse on call during the following night. I slept better knowing that I was being cared for by Michelle. She took the time to get to know us while taking care of our medical needs. She had an uncanny way of listening to us talk about our family and our life (which calmed our hearts) while doing the routine nightly steps she was trained to do. After 15 days in her care, we felt our fearful hospital stay had been transformed into something more manageable. The pneumonia I suffered from was just one more blow to an already beaten and tattered elderly couple. Michelle somehow took the time to listen and learn as we talked about our experiences with rare multi-system conditions while she dispensed meds, monitored vitals, and cared for other important personal needs. She was genuinely interested in learning about the conditions I suffered from in order to help others. Over the last couple of years, I have been hospitalized well over 10 times and during no other hospital stay have I been more optimistic and hopeful than when I was under Michelle's care. We felt as if our gas tanks had been refilled and we could start to look down the road and towards our future again. We cannot picture any other nurse who could have displayed a more exemplary example of extraordinary and compassionate care.
