It is because of people like Mary Kate that my child was able to have these moments of enjoyment and special memories from a caring nurse instead of experiencing a multi-week hospital stay that might otherwise have been painful, scary, and overwhelming for a child.
My child was a patient in the Pediatric ICU for over two weeks, and during this time, Mary Kate was her primary nurse. From her first shift with us, Mary Kate's professionalism and knowledge about our child's care and scheduled procedures were very evident, which we were grateful for because throughout the duration of the time she was admitted, Mary Kate was with us not only on the three most critical days (both times she needed to undergo surgery and the day her breathing tube was extubated) but also the entire three day shifts before we were finally able to be discharged. During this time, my 5-year-old child grew very close to Mary Kate because Mary Kate went above and beyond to do special things for her. From a clinical standpoint, Mary Kate's care was beyond compassionate and appropriate for caring for a small child while still making sure her needs were met. From a personal standpoint, Mary Kate also went above and beyond in many ways. She gathered painting supplies to help her paint the windows and glass door of her room in the PICU ward, for example. But perhaps the most touching instance was when my child's one and only request was to have strawberry ice cream on her meal tray, but unfortunately, the hospital only had vanilla available. Lo and behold, knowing that she would be on service with her the next day, Mary Kate showed up for her shift in the morning with 2 pints of strawberry ice cream, which she had gone to the store to purchase the night before after her shift ended. These gestures throughout the two weeks our child was admitted not only impressed and comforted my family so much but also caused my child to say, "This is so much fun in the hospital" before our stay was over. It is because of people like Mary Kate that my child was able to have these moments of enjoyment and special memories from a caring nurse instead of experiencing a multi-week hospital stay that might otherwise have been painful, scary, and overwhelming for a child. By the end, we all felt like Mary Kate was to be considered part of our family. My child felt like she made a new friend, and they shared a tearful goodbye even though we were happy to be getting discharged. It is obvious that Mary Kate loves her job and that she goes above and beyond for her patients. Mary Kate Davidson is a true DAISY Nurse.
