Julie's assessment skills, critical thinking, and ability to recognize a patient change in status make her stand out. This child’s parent praised Julie that day for seeing the changes and calling for a higher level of care.
Julie is an exceptional seasoned nurse with not only stellar bedside manner but assessment skills that are top notch. Julie is recognized by parents almost every time she works. Recently she was able to recognize a young non verbal child rapidly deteriorates in our busy infusion room. This patient turned out to be septic and needed the peds ICU.

Julie's assessment skills, critical thinking, and ability to recognize a patient change in status make her stand out. This child’s parent praised Julie that day for seeing the changes and calling for a higher level of care. Another example of Julie’s excellence is when she sent a trach patient home from the Keyser Center and was worried about her oxygen needs. Instead of just sending her home and hoping for the best, Julie took down the patient’s number and called her at home to make sure she was ok. It turns out the patient was requiring more interventions at home, which Julie assisted via telephone. Julie is also an excellent team player.

She often picks up extra shifts when needed, is always flexible with schedule changes during her shift, is always willing to care for our most difficult and challenging patients. Recently, we had a new oncology kid come to the clinic late in the day for chemotherapy and teaching. It was not her turn to stay late; however she had built a relationship with the family and chose to close clinic that day to stay with this patient and family. She is beyond amazing and compassionate.

Did I mention Julie is the only registry? I know it is hard to believe that she is able to accomplish all these amazing things being PRN but it is absolutely true and that is why is so deserving of this award. Thank you, Julie, for not only being your amazing self but thank you for taking such exceptional care of some of this hospital’s sickest children. Your calm demeanor and big heart inspire me to be a better nurse. Keyser Center would not be the same without you!!!
