Despite having other patients to take care of as well, he took care of me as if I were family, and in doing so, he really helped me get through one of the most difficult times of my life in what would be an amazing recovery.
Recently, I underwent the most traumatic medical procedure I have been through to date, a revision of a previous spinal fusion to address spinal stenosis in my lumbar region. Due to the complex and chaotic process of post-operative recovery, I was fairly disoriented due to medication and the constant transitions as I bounced from floor to floor in the hospital not knowing what to expect. After more than a week, I was finally able to experience the best rest I would have in the hospital. The night of my transfer to 2 West, Carlos Silva took extra effort to ensure that I was comfortably settled in my bed, replacing my linens and thoroughly cleaning me. The man has some serious skills as he massaged and wiped me down, and he also helped me calm down by explaining what would happen while there. He also answered all of my questions, and helped me get a CPAP when asked so I could sleep. For the next couple of days, he would continue to see to my needs, would be there when I woke up every morning to get out of the CPAP, and make sure I got was properly hydrated with thickened fluids I could drink (due to a temporarily paralyzed throat, I couldn't drink thin liquids), and encourage me to move about as much as I could to facilitate recovery. Despite having other patients to take care of as well, he took care of me as if I were family, and in doing so, he really helped me get through one of the most difficult times of my life in what would be an amazing recovery. While I also have the rest of my medical team to thank for the speedy healing, Carlos' encouragement and constant attention at the point between my immediate recovery and entering rehabilitation kept my spirit focused on what was next in the process rather than on languishing in pain. He was also incredibly knowledgeable in answering my questions and was able to help me contact my doctors to address other medical concerns I had while I was in the hospital, which has led to further positive health outcomes in my life to this day. As such, I believe he should be recognized for going above and beyond in taking care of his patients.
