"Because of Cason's swift interventions and advocacy, life and limb were restored."
During the time of shift change, Cason received his assignment to care for patients in the hallway beds. Before receiving the report, Cason noted this one particular patient was leaning on the side railing stretching, moaning, and writhing in pain. He arrived at the patient and noticed she "just didn't look right" and learned of her right arm pain with numbness and weakness. He immediately got the Charge Curse's attention and advocated for the patient to be placed in a room for closer monitoring and observation with a full workup of lab work, EKG, etc.

He was able to transfer her to a room and another Nurse assumed her care. Later into the shift, Cason was reassigned again and found himself resuming care of the patient he advocated for earlier. During his assessment, the patient needed a new point of intravenous access. This is when Cason found the patient's right arm to be colored, and cold, and the patient complained of increased pain. Matthew dove into action, alarming the Charge Nurse and Physician to advocate for this patient to have a CT with contrast of her arm.

The results were alarming, the patient was found to have an arterial occlusion. A heparin infusion was initiated. The patient was transported to Intervention Radiology (IR) to immediately perform measures to salvage the patient's limb. The patient was successfully transferred to a higher level of care, and IR was able to perform a thrombectomy with success. Because of Cason's swift interventions and advocacy, life and limb were restored.
