Jamie Bickley truly exemplifies the core values of Portneuf Medical Center—confident, uncompromising, resourceful, respectful, and generous. We are new parents who were not anticipating the difficult delivery and level of stress we would experience. Of course, all the nurses, physicians, and employees helped us significantly along the way with encouragement and kind words. However, that is where Jamie stands out from the crowd. She was our nurse in the NICU with our daughter for more than half of the time she was there. She was constantly checking in on us, explaining things that we didn’t even know we had questions about, and making the experience generally less scary. She gradually allowed us to be more and more involved with our child's care rounds, which we were incredibly shocked by the difficulty of. Neither of us had ever changed a diaper or fed a baby. The whole experience was like trying to herd rats with a blowdryer. Jamie was incredibly compassionate in explaining how to care for our daughter, and we felt more than comfortable asking the simplest (or dumbest) of questions. She always gave us tips and tricks, told us what to look for, and eased our hearts when we would ask about our daughter's status or health. Not only did she look out for our daughter, but she was always asking how we were doing, making sure we were sleeping, and focusing on ourselves as well. Obviously having our firstborn in the NICU was not what we had wanted, but it was almost a blessing in disguise because we were able to learn how to parent from an individual that truly cared. When we came through the doors each morning, we felt relieved and excited to find out that Jamie was going to be our daughter's nurse for the day. We truly believe Jamie is deserving of this award.
