Katie provided a sense of peace when we felt as though we were in the middle of a raging storm. She provided hope that we would be okay when we couldn't see beyond our own grief.
Katie was my nurse during one of the most difficult days of my life. My husband and I had experienced infertility and were hopeful to bring a sweet and perfect baby into this world, however at 18 weeks and 4 days our hopes and dreams came quickly crashing down around us. I was at work (As a hospitalist APRN) when I started bleeding. At the end of my shift I went to the Women's Hospital ED at which point it was decided that I should be admitted due to significant bleeding and evidence of premature rupture of my membranes. We were able to sit down with two incredibly genuine providers who were empathetic and able to provide both my husband and me with ample knowledge and support to make the best decision going forward in a very unfortunate situation.

I was discharged home from the hospital later that evening and returned the following day to induce labor. We were so lucky to have Katie as our day nurse on the day our daughter was born. She not only provided support to myself, my husband, and our sweet girl, but she provided laughter when we thought we'd never smile again. She provided a sense of peace when we felt as though we were in the middle of a raging storm. She provided hope that we would be okay when we couldn't see beyond our own grief. Katie was there all day with us as we got to hold and spend time with our daughter- time we will always cherish and be grateful for. She helped us be able to remember the time we had with her by capturing pictures we would not have otherwise had. There are truly no words to adequately describe our appreciation for Katie, the work that she does and the compassion that she showed us. She is an amazing nurse who was able to make the unimaginable and unbearable, survivable. Although I hope no other family ever has to endure the hardship of losing a baby, if they do, I hope they have a Katie. There is no way we would have made it out the other side without her.

Being a provider at Methodist, I am very cognizant of what it means to provide exceptional care, showing compassion, empathy, and being extraordinary. Going beyond the bounds of what is expected, for no other reason than that is the type of person you are- I know exactly what type of provider I want to be because Katie has shown me that.
