He constantly encouraged my son and our family by helping us focus on the small improvements my son was making each day, something we could have easily lost sight of, given the situation.
Due to my aging parents' medical complications, I have experienced many different facets of CAMC healthcare system, including intensive care, as well as other treatment centers in surrounding states. Despite my vast encounters with other medical professionals, I have never been so impressed with anyone such as my nominee.
In June of 2020, my 15 year old son was involved in a horrible dirt bike accident. He was taken to CAMC General Hospital ER, then moved to the STICU at General. His condition for the first two days was very serious, and we were concerned for his chances of survival. Once admitted to the STICU, the team immediately began administering care to my son. We had the fortunate blessing of being assigned an RN who went so far above and beyond his job role to care not only for my son but for all of us as well. Our RN was so attentive to my son's needs, comfort, and healing that I couldn't find adequate words to describe him.
Day after day, he impressed us with his technical knowledge and skills, which seemed to rival the doctors and surgeons. He was such an advocate for my son's health and well-being because of his strong medical and technical knowledge. His work ethic surpassed any other, as he seemed to move about the unit non-stop (I don't think I ever saw him sitting down), yet he continually made time to make us feel like we were the only patients in STICU. While his technical skills and work ethic were so impressive, his caring and compassion even further surpassed his skills. Every time, and I mean EVERY TIME, he entered our room, he always made it a point to ask me and my son if he could get us anything. Most of the time, I refused, but I once asked for a cup of coffee. Despite all the other things he had to do at the moment, he went to the kitchen, made a fresh pot of coffee, and hand-carried it back to me. He constantly encouraged my son and our family by helping us focus on the small improvements my son was making each day, something we could have easily lost sight of, given the situation. No matter how busy he was, our RN never pushed the "lesser" things off on his teammates. It didn't matter what needed to be done, and he did it ALL. Anything from helping my son with a bedpan to a potty chair to something as simple as a request for ice water, he was the one who took care of us every time.
We spent five days in STICU, and two days on 5 South during this event. I am 100% convinced that my son was able to walk out of that hospital in only seven days because of the extraordinary skills, care, compassion, and dedication our RN gave to him.
