Her presence was always such a comfort - it felt like we had a friend right with us.
Our medically complex 1.5 year old son is a regular at MGH, so we have been able to meet and get to know many of the wonderful staff across all of the pediatric units at this point. While all of the PICU nurses our son has had have been great, Allison Woods has always stood out to us. Our son was admitted for almost 3 weeks in August, which is when we first met her. During that admission, we had one of the scariest moments we've had as parents thus far - things took a turn for the worst and our son's oxygen saturation started dropping rapidly. We were panicking and sobbing in the corner watching as the team worked on our child. While that moment is a bit of a blur, we clearly remember Allison taking control of the situation confidently and calmly, performing a deep suction and ultimately stabilizing him. The way she handled that stressful event and supported us after it will stick with us forever. From that moment on, whenever Allison was assigned to be our son's nurse, we felt a sense of relief. He had another lengthy, complicated admission not even a month later this fall, and we were so grateful that Allison was his primary nurse. Her presence was always such a comfort - it felt like we had a friend right with us. Whether it was providing our son with top-notch care, advocating on his behalf, accompanying him to a scan outside of the PICU, comforting him through a blood draw, or bringing glimmers of humor and lightheartedness to the chaos of our son's PICU life, we knew he (and we) were in the best hands when Allison was there. . She is knowledgeable, dedicated, thoughtful, and compassionate and always made us feel as though our son was her number one priority at all times. It is clear that she truly cares about her patients and their families' well-being and goes above and beyond the call of duty. We cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award, and hope every family struggling through the darkness of having a fragile child in the hospital is fortunate enough to have the care of a nurse and "earth angel" like Allison to help them through.
