Brittaney consistently demonstrates a profound level of care and compassion as a nurse. Recently, our oncology unit faced a deeply challenging situation when one of our terminally ill patients received the devastating news that he would not be returning home. In this difficult moment, he shared one last heartfelt wish—to cast a line and catch a fish, a cherished pastime from his lifelong love of fishing.

Upon learning of this patient's wish, Brittaney swiftly mobilized our medical team, knowing that time was of the essence for this precious moment. With unwavering determination, she coordinated the gathering of 16 family members and escorted them down the staff elevator to one of the serene ponds here at Mayo Clinic. With a sense of urgency and empathy that only a true caregiver possesses, Brittaney assisted the patient in casting his line. Remarkably, on the third attempt, the patient reeled in a bass, bringing profound joy and happy tears to his and the gathered family members' eyes. This exceptional act of kindness not only granted a cherished final wish but also created a cherished memory for a patient and their family during a time of great hardship. Brittaney's dedication to going above and beyond for her patients exemplifies the qualities celebrated by the DAISY Award, and we wholeheartedly nominate her for this honor in recognition of her extraordinary compassion and the indelible impact she has on those in her care.
