I immediately felt a warmth from her, and that warmth was genuine. She wasn't just a nurse assigned to me to do her job, but rather a Godsend in a moment of fear.
I'm a 41-year-old "healthy" woman who never saw cancer in her future but was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer and started my MD Anderson treatment journey this week. Sharon was my nurse for my first treatment. As I held back tears heading into the unknown and suppressed the anxiety rising up, in walked Sharon with the most fabulous glasses I have ever seen, a head full of beautiful red braids and eyes that smiled at me even though I couldn't see her smile through the mask. She was a bright light in such a dark moment. I immediately felt a warmth from her, and that warmth was genuine. She wasn't just a nurse assigned to me to do her job, but rather a Godsend in a moment of fear. Throughout my appointment, Sharon spoke to me as a person, not a patient. I have feared being treated as a patient and she never made me feel that way. Each step, she told me what she was doing, why she was doing it, and what I might expect. She patiently answered all my questions and somehow made me feel at ease. Sharon made an impact on me that day. I'll be moved from the Main building to the Mays Clinic, but Sharon will be invited to my bell ringing since she started this journey off in a way I'll never forget.
